LCC seeks win over Lee Friday

The Palominos split a tennis duel with Incarnate Word and they swept a conference baseball match from Blinn during exciting intercollegiate athletic action last week at the Laredo Community College Fort McIntosh Campus.

This week the action continues Friday, March 7 when the Lady Palomino tennis team hosts its final home match versus Lee College of Baytown, the defending NJCAA women’s tennis champions.

The Palomino baseball team is in Alvin this weekend (March 8-9) to confront conference foe Alvin Community College.

The three-time reigning NJCAA men’s tennis champions of LCC, who boast a 4-0 record, are idle this week.

Tennis Notes

On Saturday, March 1, the men's and women's Palomino tennis teams hosted the Cardinals of the University of Incarnate Word of San Antonio at the H.E. Butt Tennis Courts.

The LCC men are on a four-game winning streak after they defeated the Cardinals 6-3.  The Lady Palominos were not as fortunate, as they were edged by the Lady Cardinals 4-5.  Earlier in the week, the Palomino men and women swept St. Mary's University of San Antonio.

“Everything is going great for the Palomino men.  We are fortunate to have played two matches at home last week and have this week off.  Next week, the men face their first junior college match versus Temple in San Antonio.  We will use this week to train hard and get ready to get back on the road.  On the women’s side, it was a tough one for the Palominos.  It just seems that it is coming down to one point to win as a team," Donjuan said.

The Lady Palominos host their last home tennis match of the season on Friday at 10 a.m. against Lee.  Admission to the tennis match at the LCC H.E. Butt Tennis Courts is free and open to students and public.  The women are is 1-4 for the season.

"The Lady Palominos face Lee College and we are looking forward to a good match.  We are healthy and have now gained much experience.  It is going to be a tough match and it’s going to come down to who wants to win more that day,” Donjuan noted.

Baseball Notes

The Palomino baseball team is riding high after posting three wins against conference foe Blinn College.  LCC won a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1 by scores of 3-0 and 5-3, before completing the sweep against the Buccaneers on Sunday, March 2 by a score of 11-10.

“In the first game, LCC delivered excellent pitching Palomino James Tankersley; he allowed just 2 hits. Offensively we executed really well and scored as a team for the first two games. Nathan Molina pitched the second game and got the win,” head coach Eric Gonzalez said.  “In the third game, it was a slug fest. LCC was down 3-8 but managed to score runs on some key hitting by the Palominos.”

For the weekend, LCC produced eight homeruns, including three by Matt Derrish, 3 by Alex Lozano and 2 by Tankersley.

LCC is at Alvin on Saturday to face off against the Alvin Dolphins during a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.  The conference action continues on Sunday, March 9 at 11 a.m.
