Men's tennis team goes for fifth national title

Campus body offers best wishes at sendoff

Students, faculty, administrators, and even the Palomino mascot, were all present at Laredo Community College to wish the LCC men’s tennis team the best of luck in nationals during a highly spirited sendoff on Thursday, May 7 in the Kazen College Center.

LCC Athletic Director Troy Van Brunt brought out the four national titles awards the Palomino men have won consecutively since 2005.  He pointed out the record the team will set out to meet.

“Laredo Community College is proud of all the achievements the men’s tennis team has claimed in the last couple of years,” Van Brunt said.  “If LCC wins its fifth straight national title, then they will tie the record with Tyler Junior College for the most national titles held consecutively.”

LCC Chief Student Development Officer Francisco Martinez Jr. said that the campus body is confident that LCC will achieve the feat.

“Laredo Community College believes in you,” said Martinez, as he addressed the team.  “We know that you will make us proud this year and come back next year to surpass that tie and show everyone why LCC is THE No. 1 team in the country.”

After introducing assistant coach Henry Estrella (who was part of the 2005 and 2006 national championship teams), head coach Jaime Donjuan proceeded by bringing each team member to the stage.

Representing LCC and the city of Laredo at the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s National Tennis Championship will be Moacir Santos, Cledson Carvalho, Juan Carlos Tolentino, Leury Arias, Luis Campos, Mateus Campos and Roberto Matos.

The tournament is from May 10 to 15 in Plano, Texas.

Upon their return to Laredo, LCC will host a “Welcome Back” Celebration for the Palominos on Saturday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.  There will be food, music and more.  Admission will be free and open to the community.

Members of the Laredo Community College men's tennis team and college officials gather behind the four national titles the Palominos have won since 2005.  The team will now attempt to win their fifth straight national title to tie the record with Tyler Junior College for the most national titles won.  They are, from left, front, chief student development officer Francisco Martinez Jr., Leury Arias, Juan Carlos Tolentino, assistant coach Henry Estrella, head coach Jaime Donjuan and athletic director Troy Van Brunt; back, Mateus Campos, Luis Campos, Roberto Matos, Cledson Carvalho, Moacir Dos Santos-Filho and dean of student affairs Robert Ochoa.
