Canales earns 400th career win; LCC volleyball preps for local action

Laredo Community College's win against Galveston College on Friday, Oct. 16 was a special milestone for head volleyball coach Binny Canales.

The victory marked the 400th win in Canales' career, which consists of a win/lose record of 400-185.

Canales has coached volleyball for 20 years, including 17 as a head coach.

"I'm grateful for the support I've received from LCC president Dr. Juan Maldonado and his administration, athletic director Troy Van Brunt and former LCC president Dr. Ramon Dovalina, as well as local high school coaches and the community," Canales said.  "After coaching 12 years in Laredo at both Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University, I'm proud to say that Laredo is my home."

Canales is especially proud of the student-athlete talent that has come out of LCC and TAMIU.  Several former players are now head volleyball coaches at local and area high schools, including Leticia Longoria at United, Becky Acosta at Martin, Priscilla San Miguel at Lyndon B. Johnson and Desiree Arredondo at Floresville.  Countless others are assistant volleyball coaches and others have gone to pursue varied careers such as the healthcare field, Canales noted.

Making adjustments

While the career milestone is significant for Canales, he has little time to celebrate this accomplishment.

LCC is finishing its conference season this week at home against two powerhouses at the Maravillo Gymnasium on the LCC Fort McIntosh Campus.

On Friday, Oct. 23, the Palominos face the Lee College Rebels at 6 p.m., followed by the San Jacinto College Ravens on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.  Admission to both matches is free and open to the campus body and public.

"The team needs to do a lot of practice this week.  Due to injuries and illnesses, adjustments need to be made and the team needs to be ready to adjust to those changes.  The whole experience makes it more challenging, which is good because this adds character to the team," Canales said.

"I'm proud of what the team has accomplished so far.  The team has faced adversity head on and held their ground pretty good."

Currently in fourth place, LCC is 5-3 in conference and 12-8 overall.
