The Computer Information Systems program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree, with specializations in Networking Technology, Business Applications, or Media and Web Technology. The Computer Information System discipline also offers two certificates: Computer Information Systems- Basic Skills Certificate (1 semester) and Computer Information Systems-Personal Computer Support Specialist (1 year) for those who desire to prepare themselves for immediate entry into the workforce.

The Computer Technology department is a CISCO Academy and is also a Microsoft IT Academy. This has allowed the Computer Technology department to integrate the CISCO and Microsoft certified courses into the Networking Technology specialization. This provides the students a more well rounded education in the networking field, and allows the students to prepare for the CISCO certification (CCNA) and Microsoft certifications. Laredo Community College is now a testing site for professional certifications allowing our students the ability to test locally.

Courses are practical in nature. Lectures are supplemented by dedicated labs, where emphasis is placed on the progressive attainment of operating and technical administrative skills in a "hands-on" environment. In the computer labs, students enjoy the advantage of access to new, state-of-the-art technology, including more than one hundred network-based microcomputers and various specialized software environments. Computer Science and Computer Information Systems are complex fields offering many career options. Individuals considering careers in computers and those planning to transfer for a four-year degree are strongly encouraged to consult with Computer Technology Department instructors to ensure a wellplanned curriculum and compatibility with degree plans of specific four-year schools.

Computer Information Systems Certificates have been flexibly designed for students who want an exit-point, but who plan to continue their education in the field. The program covers an understanding of PC operating systems, integrated software applications, Internet networking, computer hardware, and help desk support. The students have the option to pursue the Computer Information Systems-Basic Skills Certificate (one semester) or the Computer Information Systems-Personal Computer Support Specialist Certificate (two semesters). The courses in the certificates are applicable to the A.A.S. in certain specializations.

Note: All CIS discipline courses require a grade of "C" or better.
