
The mercury is rising at Laredo Community College as it hosts three days of volleyball action in the Maravillo Gymnasium.
The fever struck on Thursday, Sept. 13 when the Palominos hosted their first conference match for the 2007 season versus the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers. The Palominos topped the Pioneers in three games, 30-22, 30-27, 30-17. LCC is now 1-0 in conference and 2-4 overall.
The temperature continues to rise on Friday, Sept. 14 with the return of LCC’s two-day international tournament, the McBar International Volleyball Invitational.
Established during the inaugural year of the LCC volleyball program in 1978, the international tourney features teams from the United States and Mexico.
After a brief hiatus in 2004, the international tournament comes to life this year with six teams, including LCC, Navarro College, Wharton and Coastal Bend from the U.S.
Representing Mexico are Monterrey Tech and Monterrey Pentathlon.
The tournament will be divided into two pools of teams with all matches being the best 3 out of 5. Trophies will be awarded to the tournament’s top 2 teams.
In Pool A are Navarro, Wharton and Tech. Pool B includes LCC, Coastal Bend and Pentathlon.
Friday’s schedule is as follows:
10 a.m. – LCC vs. Coastal Bend
12 p.m. – Navarro vs. Wharton
2 p.m. – Coastal Bend vs. Pentathlon
4 p.m. – Wharton vs. Pentathlon
6 p.m. – LCC vs. Pentathlon
8 p.m. – Navarro vs. Tech
After Friday’s results, the teams in each pool will be ranked and will play on Saturday as follows:
9 a.m. – 1A vs. 2B
11 a.m. – 1B vs. 2A
1 p.m. – 3A vs. 3B
3 p.m. – Winner of 9 a.m. match vs. Winner of 11 a.m. match.
Admission to the tournament games also is free of charge.
