Reading courses are designed to help students strengthen their reading skills and thus prepare them to be
successful in college level courses. Reading comprehension, rate, flexibility, selectivity, and vocabulary
development are emphasized. Each course features instruction at specific reading levels.
Homogeneous grouping and individual student placement are determined by the College's assessment and placement
policy. These courses are sequential.
Communication Studies courses (formerly Speech Communication) are designed to help students strengthen their
interpersonal, group, and presentational communication skills. Communication studies, moreover, offers areas
that help students specialize in human communication theory. Each course features instruction in the specific
communication contexts which deal with human interaction. Students are also introduced to various human
communication and mass communication theories, such as film appreciation and criticism. Students may choose
to earn an Associate of Arts in Teaching (Speech Communication/Studies emphasis), Associate of Arts general,
or an Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in Communication Studies.
